MasterCard Consumer Payment Trend
Survey Results
MasterCard recently commissioned a national
telephone survey to gain additional insight into
consumer payment trends and preferences. Survey
results indicate that nearly half (49 percent) of
consumers carry $20 or less in their wallet and that
86 percent of consumers reported they want to use
cash less often than they currently do.

According to the survey, nearly 40 percent of U.S.
adults carry less cash with them compared with five
years ago. Twenty-six percent say they carry “a lot
less” cash. People were asked how likely they would
be to use their current credit or debit card if it were
enhanced with a contactless payment option. While
contactless payments have yet to be “mainstream,”
almost half of the people (45 percent) indicated they
would likely use such a card. People identify
convenience (42 percent) and speed (18 percent) as
the two most important reasons for considering use
of a contactless payment card.

These survey results are in line with 2002 studies
which showed that 53 percent of consumers would
use MasterCard PayPass to replace cash payments
if their banks offered it to them.
